Antimicrobial Activity and Transparency of Polyvinyl Butyral Paint Containing Heated Scallop-Shell Powder

The main component of seashells is calcium carbonate (CaCO3). When are calcined at high temperatures, CaCO3 becomes oxide (CaO), and this CaO exhibits antimicrobial activity. In study, we attempted to develop a transparent coating that retains activity for long time by mixing polyvinyl butyral (PVB), which has excellent adhesive binding properties, with heated shell powder (HSP). scallop HSPs used in study were nanoparticles particle diameter approximately several hundred nm, the prepared paint showed transparency. Elemental analysis HSP particles existed as Ca(OH)2. surface applied HSP-containing PVB (HSSP-PVB) was then evaluated using JIS Z 2801 ISO 21702: 2019. HSSP-PVB paint-applied surfaces antibacterial antiviral HSP-PVB attributed creation strongly alkaline environment due hydration, maintained period time. It suggested covered scalloped particles, significantly prevented from contacting CO2 H2O molecules air.
